Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported: “When a wind blew, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would kneel and recite the following du’a: اللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْهَا رَحْمَةً، وَلَا تَجْعَلْهَا عَذَابًا، اللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْهَا رِيَاحًا، وَلَا تَجْعَلْهَا رِيحًا Transliteration: Allahummaj ‘alha rahmatan wa la taj’alha ‘adhaba. Allahummaj ‘alha riyaha wa la taj’alha riha Translation: O Allah! Make this wind a means of Mercy and do not make it a means of punishment. O Allah, make it winds and not a wind. (Allah Ta’ala generally uses the singular form of “wind” in Quran when discussing punishment, while the plural form “winds” is used when depicting a scene of mercy. The commentators explain that a wind blowing from a single direction can be destructive, contrary to when it blows from multiple directions) (Musnadush Shafi’i) Hadith Answers
